Gastronomica on the media's mind
Summer is soon upon us, and food and Gastronomica are on the media's mind: SF Weekly's SFoodie, in naming "The 10 Coolest Specialty Food and Drink Magazines" says "2... Gastronomica is the leading American publication for intellectual musings on food, yet it's rarely eggheady enough to alienate the enthusiastic general reader" (click here to read more), while across the country, New York Magazine asks "What Do Chefs Read?" and the answer for Neal Harden of NYC's Pure Food and Wine is Gastronomica, where he learns about "the cultural role of food" (click here to read more). Not to be outdone, Twitterers (Tweeters?) say of Gastronomica: "Nerdy foodie porn all the way" and a "national culinary treasure."

Gastronomica named "Top Food Favorite"
From The Zest food blog's "top food favorites from 2008":
2. Gastronomica--Its replaced the New Yorker as the reading that keeps me up at night, and that I tote around with me to read at red lights/in the school pickup line/during other situations when I can peruse in snatches. This academic journal is a delightful study of all things food, even those that touch the world of food in a peripheral way."

Feast for the Eyes at Gastronomica Forum: The Art of Nina Katchadourian
What happens when food and marketing collide, while an artist turns her critical gaze towards the crash?
In the cheeky installation piece Genealogy of the Supermarket, artist Nina Katchadourian identifies relationships between mass-market brands, connecting characters (such as the Quaker Oats Man and Aunt Jemima) who stand in for common products from the grocery store. Each iconic face is treated to its own frame and all are laid out in a large family tree. In creating these relationships the artist raises questions about heritage, lineage, and how ethnicity equates with authenticity in the way we interact with both food and packaging.
Join us for our next Gastronomica Forum--Wednesday, February 18 at New York City's Astor Center--where we'll tackle the subject of food marketing with a panel including Katchadourian, Gastronomica Editor-in-Chief Darra Goldstein, and Graphic Designer/Food Culture scholar Cory Bernat.

The keynote address will be given by Darra Goldstein, editor-in-chief of the food and culture journal Gastronomica. She will speak on the topic "Can Food Be a Force for Social Change?" on Thursday, February 5, at 4:30 p.m.

At Supper with Leonardo
John Varriano's article "At Supper with Leonardo" (Gastronomica 8:1) has raised eyebrows across the media landscape with his surprising finding-- revealed through the conservation of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece--of a Renaissance haute cuisine Last Supper menu of grilled eel garnished with orange slices, instead of the more traditional lamb and bread most observers had come to believe.

Gastronomica Forum at NYC's Astor Center
The Gastronomica Forums, launched by Darra Goldstein, Founder and Editor-In-Chief of Gastronomica, are quarterly events featuring important articles from the journal as a platform for engaging in deeper conversations about food and culture.
The most recent Gastronomica Forum took place at Astor Center in New York City on Tuesday, October 28, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Gwen Hyman, author of "The Taste of Fame: Chefs, Diner, Celebrity, Class," discussed the meaning of celebrity with an impressive panel of New York City chefs.
Additional panelists included:
Andrew Carmellini, formerly the chef at New York City's A Voce and author (with Gwen Hyman) of "Urban Italian: Simple Recipes and True Stories from a Life in Food." A Voce won 3 stars from the New York Times as well as a Michelin star. Carmellini has won numerous awards, including Best Chef: New York City honors from the James Beard Foundation. Read more about their book.
Mitchell Davis, Vice-President of the James Beard Foundation, where he has worked since 1993. An adjunct professor and doctoral candidate in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, he studies restaurant criticism and its power to shape taste. Davis is the author of four cookbooks and has just finished writing about the role of restaurants and food culture in New York City.
David Chang is the owner and head chef of the Momofuku restaurants in New York City. After graduating from Trinity College in Hartford, CT, Dave attended the French Culinary Institute and began cooking at Jean-George Vongerichten's Mercer Kitchen. He then joined the opening staff at Tom Colicchio's Craft. In 2003 Dave moved to Japan, where he studied at various kaseki, izakaya and ramen restaurants. After returning to New York, he opened his first restaurant, Momofuku Noodle Bar, in 2004, followed by Momofuku Ssäm Bar in 2006 and then Momofuku Ko, a 12-seat space with a collaborative kitchen run by the Momofuku team chefs.
Gail Simmons handles special projects at Food & Wine, including management of the annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, the country's premier culinary event. Before joining Food & Wine, she worked as the special events manager for Chef Daniel Boulud's restaurant empire. Gail began her culinary career writing about food for Toronto Life magazine and the National Post; she then worked as a recipe and research assistant to Jeffrey Steingarten at Vogue. She has held apprenticeships at Le Cirque 2000 and Vong restaurants and is currently a permanent judge on BRAVO's hit reality series Top Chef, now in its fifth season.
The inaugural Gastronomica Forum in February 2008 took us to the front lines of the struggle in New York City between artisans attempting to preserve traditional foods and the regulators determined to modernize and standardize the workplace. Writer Sarah DiGegorio, charcutier Marc Buzzio, and a representative from the USDA presented their perspectives. The evening included a tasting of Marc's artisanal dry-cured meats from Salumeria Biellese, paired with Italian wines.
The second Gastronomica Forum explored the concept of taking care of the land and farming it to serve God, as seen from both the Islamic (tayyib) and Jewish (eco-kosher) perspectives. Writer Leah Koenig discussed the role of faith with farmers Zaid Kurdieh and Anna Stevenson. There was also a tasting of farm products and Middle Eastern foods.

Gastronomica Editor interviewed for Utne
An interview with Darra Goldstein appears in the "Great Writing" section of "Utne Blogs," a section of the Utne Reader's
web site. She discusses, among other things, the origins and evolutions of Gastronomica, and what makes for good food
writing. "For instance, in the May issue there will be an article that I find very disturbing, and I think readers will, too.
It's about an artist who harvests her own eggs. It's a social commentary on caviar and the egg as a luxury good and the way women
sell their eggs to make money. It's a perfect Gastronomica article because it's looking at food, but it's also horrifying and pushing
against the edges of good taste."

each issue is an artfully curated collection of essays, poems, art, and journalistic reportage . . . Gastronomica's fare never
fails to nourish us."

Gastronomica Presents: A Tribute to Julia Child
The August 2005 issue is devoted solely to remembering Julia Child and honoring her legacy. Julia, who died last year at the age of 91,
changed the way America thinks about food, cooking, and the culinary world as a whole. An extraordinary roster of contributors has
provided their thoughts, memories, and perceptions about the life and legacy of Julia Child, and many speak to how she affected their
lives. Many of them are instantly recognizable to any food maven: Jacques Pépin. Anne Willan. Jasper White. Sara Moulton. Just
as important are the less familiar contributors who have not written publicly about Julia before, such as Julia's longtime personal
assistant, Stephanie Hersh.
